A complete cast 'boat-shaped' lead pig ingot, lenticular in plan, triangular in section and plano-convex in profile. The lateral surfaces of the ingot are uneven and pitted, suggesting that it was produced by being poured into a hollow in the ground, perhaps lined with clay, rather than in a mould. The upper surface is slightly dished, consistent with the shrinking of the molten lead as it cooled. There are two narrow, linear scratches along one face, possibly caused by the plough; otherwise the ingot appears to be largely undamaged.
See record IOW-7232A6 for a similar boat-shaped lead ingot.
Egan (2005) illustrates a lead ingot and an antimony (which can appear like lead and is found in Cornwall) ingot on pages 147-8, figs.139 & 141, nos.779 & 784, which are dated from the 16th to the 17th century.
Bailey (2008) illustrates the manufacturing of plano-convex lead ingots during the Tudor Period on pages 39-40, figs.C10.1-2.
