Lead tokens are difficult to date precisely and could be medieval to post medieval in date (AD1250-1800). Cross and pellet designs were originally thought to be contemporary with similar medieval coin designs; however publication of moulds and double faced tokens which combine post medieval initial style designs with cross and pellets suggest they continued to be used throughout the post medieval period. The majority of lead tokens are thought to date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (AD1600-1800) as increasing numbers of dated tokens are found.
