Copper alloy buckle. Cast rectangular single looped buckle frame, of rectangular section, clasped by a slotted plate which is rectangular on its display face and oval-ended behind. A pair of rivets of diameter 2.6mm and length 5.4mm [one lost] passed through the inner corners of the plate, possibly adorned with enlarged heads of diameter c.4mm though these are now lost. The inner ends of the rivets passed through thin [0.8mm] circular roves cut from sheet metal to attach the plate to its strap. A cast pin is wrapped around the frame and protrudes from the slot in the plate. A centrally incised longitudinal groove is met by another at right angles near the midpoint of the pin, to form a cross. The surface of the plate bears faint relicts of pitted or stamped decoration and traces of gilding. An early medieval date was initially suggested, but Rob Webley kindly comments as follows: 'I'm not sure what about this buckle makes it as early as suggested, other than what it has been found near.  I think this is typologically medieval, around the 13th century, and see that there is other medieval and later material nearby'. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300.

Length: 25.6mm, Height: 30.5mm, Thickness (frame): 1.8mm, Weight: 6.88gms

Notes:

The finder suggests this to be part of an assemblage amounting to c.5% of material recovered from an extensive site, the rest being removed illicitly without record. Archaeological opinion holds the site to have been of equivalent character to Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, in terms of its material culture. Coins are under-represented in the group
