A complete copper alloy clothes fastener/dress hook of the Post Medieval period dating from c. AD 1500 - c. AD 1600.
The dress hook has an oval plate, with a domed centre, and a trapezoidal, almost square attachment loop in the same plane as the oval plate. The design on the plate depicts a five petalled flower with a pierced centre. There is a thin border around the outside edge surrounding the flower. The reverse of the plate is concave. There is a hook on the other side of the central plate, opposite the square loop. The hook is bent backwards.
The dress hook is of green colour (corrosive products), with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Similar examples have been published as #335 in Read, 2008 (p 94) , classified as Early Post Medieval Class E single sharp hooked clasps, Type 3. Read (2008, 87), mentions that all Class E clasps recovered by the Thames Mudlarks have been from secure c. AD 1500 to c. AD 1550 deposits, suggesting a 16th Century date. Broadly similar examples have also been recorded on the database, including WMID-D5C818 (with Shakespeare bust), WMID-E5EE81, NLM-6FEE0F, WMID-D2C3F1 and NLM-F0EB37.
