Unique ID: NLM-943014

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.5mm. Each side bears moulded decoration comprising three concentric ribs, at the outer, inner and central parts of each side, crossed by equidistantly spaced radial ribs. The mass may suggest a primary function plying cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Diameter: 34.1mm, Thickness: 13.0mm, Weight: 68.48gms

Notes:

The finder suggests this to be part of an assemblage amounting to c.5% of material recovered from an extensive site, the rest being removed illicitly without record. Archaeological opinion holds the site to have been of equivalent character to Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, in terms of its material culture. Coins are under-represented in the group.
