COIN

Unique ID: BERK-92BA49

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A complete Iron Age silver unit of the Southern Region / Berkshire, dating to the period c.55-40 BC, 'Abingdon zoo' type. Obverse: Boar with ladder mane, right, leaping horse above. Reverse: Horse right, with smaller horse between legs and another horse upside-down above.

Cf. ABC, p. 65, no. 1004. This coin is a variation of ABC 1004 (horse right) and the same as de Jersey's (1998) Type 1b. An almost identical coin (possibly even the same die) is recorded from Chute, Wiltshire (CCI-11464 on this database or CCI database 01.1464). The identity of the 'Berkshire' tribe and their centre is still unknown however as more of these coins with good provenance come to light it will hopefully be possible, one day, to identify them. Cottam et. al. (2010:65) suggest that the tribe's centre may be Dorchester-on-Thames, now in Oxfordshire.
