Copper alloy probable netting needle. A cast pin with an oval-ended flat head with a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, bent at mid-shank and worn at the head; abraded. There is no gutter next to the hole, in contrast to copper alloy sewing needles from Flixborough and elsewhere. The curved shank might suggest this to be for a specialised task, and is a feature of larger netting needles. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500.
Length: 28.2mm, Width: 4.8mm, Thickness (top of shank): 2.6mm, Weight: 0.66gms
Notes:
The finder suggests this to be part of an assemblage amounting to c.5% of material recovered from an extensive site, the rest being removed illicitly without record. Archaeological opinion holds the site to have been of equivalent character to Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, in terms of its material culture. Coins are under-represented in the group.
