An incomplete Post-Medieval lead alnage cloth seal, probably dating to c. AD 1575-1603. Disc 4 of a 4-disc cloth seal, with the remains of two connecting strips on opposing sides of the disc. The disc has been stamped, although this has been largely obscured by the large aperture created by the rivet. The survivign stamp consists of the letter E to the left of a single arched crown, surmounting a probable shield or portcullis, the upper left corner of which can be seen. The right half of the disc is worn and no R can be seen. The number 13 is scratched in Roman numerals between 5 and 4 o'clock.
Dimensions: length: 20.8mm; width 23.4mm; thickness 1.2mm; weight 4.19g.
The position of the E to the left of the crown would imply a likely R to the right, although it is no longer visible, suggesting a date within the reign of Elizabeth I (cf. similar example for James I, Egan 1994, no. 125). Although early for a 4-part seal, Egan (1992) does note that they were probably in use by the late 16th century.
