A rim sherd from a Post Medieval Surrey Hampshire border ware, 'encrusted ware' lid dating from the AD 1620-1650. Similar lids are illustrated in Haslam (1975:177 fig.7, No.64-65) excavated from the pottery site at Cove, east Hampshire and is dated to second quarter of the 17th century and Pearce (1992: 65 fig.36 No.276 G). The lid is made from a buff fabric and is covered on the upper surface with a mottled green glaze and chippings of crushed flint. The underside is undecorated.
Dimensions: length: 57.24mm; width: 34.40mm; height: 13.87mm; weight: 16.53g
Pearce (1992:28) writes "One of the green-glazed encrusted mugs from London (No 277) was found with its lid (No 276), also green-glazed. The lid can be paralleled at Cove (Haslam 1975, fig 7, nos 64-5). Its encrustation stops short of the missing knop, which shows nail-marks around the base. The only datable Type 2 mugs from London comes from a mid-17th century context."
Haslam (1975:176) writes "Several lids (five in number, of which two, nos. 64-5, are illustrated) with similar crushed flint decoration on the upper surface, and with either brown or green glazes, were also recovered. The form and decoration of these suggests that they must have formed covers to the drinking vessels of this type. These covers were thrown upside down on a wheel, knob handles (now missing) applied separately after removal."
