DEBITAGE

Unique ID: DEV-66439A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Three worked flint flakes of Prehistoric debitage, all secondary flakes of probable pebble flint, with one exhibiting evidence of retouch. The dating of such a small assemblage must remain highly tentative, however, the general crudeness of the knapping, as well as comparison to two cores found as part of the saem scatter (DEV-ED0824) may suggest a Neolithic to Bronze Age date, c. 3000-800 BC. DEV-667E4A is also part of this same scatter.

1. Secondary flake; brown flint mottled with plaer/white inclusions. c. 40% of distal end covered in cortex. 2 previous sub-parallel removals, both blade-like flakes, struck from the same direction as over all removal. Striking platform survives at proximal end with a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion, unscarred, but with pronounced ripples. No retouch. w: 10.90g.

2. Secondary flake; biege flint heavily patinated white across much of its surface. Struck directly through cortex with it still covering the striking platform. Two irregualrly shaped removals on dorsal face, with a hinged removal cutting through a previous one, both struck at slightly varying angles to the overall removal, as might be expected if struck from an unprepared pebble. Very small bulb of percussion, unscarred. No retouch. w: 2.99g.

3. Incomplete secondary flake, distal end lost to a natural break. A grey/brown flint highly mottled with patches of white/grey material as well as smaller fleck-like inclusions. A small, <5%, amount of cortex remains on the left mesal edge of the dorsal face, truncated by the natural break. Multiple removals survive on the dorsal face, the principal is flake-like, with a pronounced and slightly hinged nagative of the bulb of percussion. The other removals are sub-parallel, but are truncated and damaged, it is not clear what direction they were struck from. A tiny portion of the striking platform survives with a very diffuse bulb of percussion. No retouch. w: 8.29g.
