A medieval lead seal matrix, AD1300-1400. The matrix is a pointed oval in plan (often called vessica-shaped) with an integral, circular suspension loop at the top. The face of the seal is decorated with what appears to be a stylised fleur-de-lis. The inscription surrounding it reads * • S' • hVGON' • F' RICAR'; translated as Seal of Hugo, son of Richard. The reverse is plain except for an inscribed line following one edge and 2mm in from that edge. It appears to be a failed attempt to engrave the seal matrix which was abandoned in favour of the other side. The edge of the matrix also seems to have been trimmed along the length of this side.
