A Post-Medieval lead cloth seal, issued during the reign of James I (AD 1603-1625) and dating to AD 1612. An incomplete probable 4-disc alnage seal, with two discs surviving, although now in two parts, broken at a fresh break. Disc 1 is stamped with a crowned thistle between [1]6 - 12, disc 2 is less clear, but appears to be 810 below [...]ET.
Dimensions: Disc 1: length 19.6mm; width 16.2mm; thickness 1.3mm; weight 2.20g. Disc 2: length 18.7mm; width 17.5mm; thickness 2.2mm; weight 2.86g.
Although no direct parallel has been idenitfied for this seal, the crowned thistle frequently appeared on alnage seals in this period, see for example Egan (1994: 178, no. 141).
