METAL WORKING DEBRIS

Unique ID: SOM-FFCB8C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A small piece of copper alloy metal working debris, of probable Prehistoric date, c. 2100 BC - AD 43. The potential ingot consists of a slightly irregular bar of copper alloy with an oval cross-section, both ends are abraded, but the object appears complete. There are no markings on the surface which has a dark brown patina, where this has been lost it reveals a bright green core.

Dimensions: length 56.1mm; width 11.1mm; thickness 8.5mm; weight 24.02g.

Whilst similar objects have been identified as Early Medieval based on comparison to Anglo-Scandinavian silver ingots (e.g. LANCUM-9CB512), the object is largely undiagnostic and the patina of the metal is far more reminiscent of Prehistoric material, particularly Bronze Age metal work.
