CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: DEV-95F20D

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete Post-Medieval lead 2-part cloth seal, probably dating to c. AD 1500-1700. The outer edge of both discs has been lost, effectively leaving only the integral rivet. One face is stamped with a chevron-barred intial A for Augsburg, the other with the initials E/F V/W, surmounted by a crescent between two pellets.

Dimensions: diameter 13.6mm; thickness 2.8mm; weight 1.71g.

Seals from Augsburg date to the 16th and 17th centuries and are by far the most commonly continental seals found within Britain (Egan 1994: 106). This example is unusal in being stamped with intials rather than the heraldic symbol of the city, the pinecone, cf. ibid fig. 41, nos. 308-310.

Notes:

Previously on the database as the unfinished record DEV-6A2503, mis-identified as a token.

Inscription: A // E W or E V or F W or F V
