A complete lead seal matrix dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1300). The seal is pointed-oval and broadly flat. The reverse has an intergral perforated lug at the top of the seal; other than this the reverse is undecorated. The design on the engraved face of the seal is an elaborate fleur-de-lis above a cross pattee. The design is surrounded by an inscription contained within a pair of parallel lines, forming a border around the seal. The legend begins with a cross pattee at the top. It is not easy to read; originally it was read as + S VILE LNI IN ANEW but it now seems more likely that it reads + S' WILELMI IN ANGVL' (Seal of William in Angul..) The place-name Angul... has not been identified.
The overall dimensions are 33.65mm in length, 19.71mm in width, 7.43mm in thickness and 10.85g in weight.
Inscription:
+ S' WILELMI IN ANGVL'
