POWDER MEASURE

Unique ID: SOM-81A21D

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Post-Medieval lead powder measure cap, probably dating to the 17th century. The cap has slightly flaring sides, with a flat, oval top. The cap has been crushed, with the sides squashed closely together. The remains of two attachment loops survive at the top of the cap, one on either side. Faint vertical casting seams are visible on either side of the cap, on a line perpendicular to the attachment loops.

The measure cap is 28.13mm iin length, 21.04mm in width and weighs 10.93g. Such caps would have been attached to bandoliers and are common finds on most Civil War sites, as such they probably date to the 17th century (Courtney 1988: 2). Similar examples can be found in SOM-453E9B and SOM-457B68.
