An almost complete post medieval copper alloy saddle pommel dating to the 16th or 17th century. The hollow and domed pommel comprises two halves which are separated. It was originally a short cyliner with a domed end and curved cut away area on one side at the base. One half has a projecting arm with a rivet hole, next to the cur away area, and there is a second rivet hole about half way along the lower edge. The other half has an old break and the arm is missing. Both halves are incised with multiple vertical lines around the upper side with a plain area on the underside near the cut away. The object has a green and brown patina, black in the incised grooves may suggest a linseed coating.. The pommel measures 60.30mm in length, 44.48mm in width including the arm, 24.34mm in diameter at the head and weighs 58.07g.
A similar example can be found at SUR-764DF7 on this database. These pommels are thought to date to the 16th or 17th century and a complete example is illustrated in Read (1995) page 127, No. 808.
