A very worn, copper-alloy Scottish twopence, or thistle turner, of Charles I , AD1642-9.

The obverse shows a crowned CR, possibly with a pellet dividing the letters, with an illegible inscription around it. The reverse, also very worn, probably shows a thistle, again surrounded by an illegible description. The coin is probably as described in Spink no.5602, page 86 (2002) or in Murray and Stewart, plate III, types 1-6. The coin weighs 1.8g; it has a diameter of 18.96mm and is 1.09mm. thick.

The word 'turner' is thought to derive from the French 'tournois', for a coin struck in Tours; the coin was used extensively from1631 onwards. In February 1642, the Scottish Privy Council ordered 1500 stone of turners to replace all copper coins previously struck in Scotland, the circulation of which was banned in March 1642 ( Murray and Stewart)
