A copper-alloy Roman nummus of Constantine I (AD 306-337), dating to the period AD 321-323 (Reece period 16). The coin has been double struck with a later BEATA TRANQVILLITAS type (AD 321-323) over a SOLI INVICTO COMITI undertype (AD 313-318) that is visible on both faces.
Obverse: CONSTA-NTINVS [...], Helmeted and cuirassed bust right. Struck over: [SOLI INVICTO] COMITI reverse type depicting Sol standing left?
Reverse: [BEATA] TRAN-QVILLITAS reverse type depicting a globe on an altar inscribed VOT/IS/XX, three stars above. Struck over: [...]ANTINVS AVG, Laureate and cuirassed(?) bust right.
The SOLI INVICTO COMITI undertype has a partial mintmark: [] (F?)//QARL, indicating the original striking took place at the mint of Arles between AD 313-318. However, the mintmark for the final visible BEATA TRANQVILLITAS type is obscrued by the undertype and it could therefore have been struck at any date between AD 321-323 and conceivably at any of the western mints.
