A very worn and corroded plated halfcrown of the Commonwealth period AD 1649-1660, probably a forgery.
The coin is made of copper alloy coated with white metal. The obverse shows a portion of the inscription [THE COMMONWE] ALTH OF EN[GLAND] separated by dots. The reverse possibly shows the outer edge of a shield surrounded by a very worn circumferential border with only a V left of the inscription. The coin has a hole pierced at 12 o'clock for use possibly as a pendant.
The coin weighs 13.5g, has a diameter of 36.30mm and a thickness of 1.91mm.
There are four similar coins on the database, two forgeries at NCL-DFA766 and SWYOR-1CBA94 and two genuine at ESS-CE0A28 and DUR-6798E6.
Notes:
The coin shows no evidence of gilding or fittings, nor is there evidence that the coin was removed from general circulation. As such, the modification of this coin has been determined to not meet the criteria of the Treasure Act 1996 in regard to pierced coins.
