A complete copper alloy massive or donside terret ring, of Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 200).
The terret is semi-circular, with an oval cross-section. The object is decorated with a lipped projection into the ring interior. The base of the object has an oval opening which is hollow inside. An incised groove be seen defining the oval opening. No traces of an attachment bar can be easily seen inside the oval opening.
It measures 68.6 mm tall, 73.7 mm wide and 22.4 mm thick. The base is 30.9 mm long by 20.8 mm wide, with a depth of 13.3 mm. The terret ring is 5.2 mm thick at the top. It weighs 110.7 g.
The object has a dark brown patina.
Several similar terret rings have been recorded on the PAS database. These include: LANCUM-1F06E0; LVPL-11CDE3; SUR-F9FB80. It is similar to an example from Chesters, Northumberland, illustrated in Jope 2000, 309, 291e and MacGregor 1976, 113. Dating is likely to be from the late 1st to mid 3rd century AD. This style is often referred to as Massive or Donside terret, due to their size and initial identification in the Donside area of north-eastern Scotland.
