Post medieval copper alloy mount from a candle snuffer, or wick trimmer dating to the period c. AD 1650 - 1775. Rectangular in shape, with a trefoliate terminal at each end. Each foil of each terminal exhibits a blind drill mark. The tips of both foils are missing due to old breaks. The rectangular body is decorated by four punched ring-and-dot motifs. In the centre are a pair of engraved longitudinal lines and, at either end, a longitudinal line dividing the terminals from the body. Above and below the ring-and-dot motifs is an engraved horizontal line with faint zig-zag engraving running along its length. In two corners of the mount are drilled circular perforations, both of which retain the remains of a copper alloy rivet. The edges of the mount are bevelled. The back of the mount is flat and undecorated. It exhibits a sereis of file marks and traces of solder.

A wick trimmer with applied mounts of this form was found during excavation in Southampton, in a pit containing material datable to c. AD 1630-1725; a separate trefoil mount was found in the same pit (Scott in Brown and Hardy 2011, 178-180; figs 5.30-5.31, nos 59, 65).

Further examples of such mounts can be found on this database, some more ornately finished. For other examples of this kind of scissors-type candle snuffer, see SOM-409575, WAW-35DFC3, SWYOR-6E9078, LIN-F6A115 and PUBLIC-8BF257. For a mount in place on a broken candle snuffer see HAMP-917D56 on this database.
