Copper alloy brooch. Colchester derivative brooch of rear-hook type. Mackreth type, CD RH 2.c. Semi-circular wings bear deep grooved vertical decoration and are stained by ?rust from a separate spring [now lost], A rearward pointing hook rises from the crest of the bow and would have appeared to grasp the spring. The bow is D-sectioned and clasps the wings, with a probable longitudinal ridge; its sides are decorated by a series of deep diagonal slashes added by hand. The rearhook brooches are thought to be a product of the Iceni tribe up to the Boudiccan revolt of AD61, and thereafter mark a diaspora of craftsmen to locations including Castleford, West Yorkshire, where some may have been forcibly located. Suggested date: Early Roman, 50-61.
