Medieval (14th to 15th century) buckle or strap end: The object is cast from copper alloy and is incomplete. The box of the strap element is incomplete with much of the back plate missing. The strap element is trapezoidal and is decorated on one face with flower on a single stem with two leaves. The narrow edge of the strap element has a narrowed and concave collar before it leads to the buckle or openwork element of the object. The buckle frame is fragmentary with only a portion of one side edge remaining. The surface of the buckle has an incomplete dark green abraded patina.
The buckle measures 43.88mm in length, 19.92mm in width, 5.63mm thick and weighs10.3g.
Similar buckles and strap ends are recorded on the database, including SUR-037308, SUR-8EB387, CORN-D7ECF6, dating to the 14th to 15th centuries. Ward-Perkins (1940) illustrates similar buckles and strap ends, Figure 85 Nos. 1 and 5.
