Post Medieval toggle, cast copper alloy, the attachment being in the form of two, conjoined rings linked by a flat-sectioned bar to a cylindrical fitting, the ends of which are pointed. Length 24.5mm, Width 23.0mm, Thickness 8.0mm, Mass 8.09g.
Objects like this present something of a problem which is reviewed in the discussion of SOM-5CC893. None have ever been found in a dated context. They were initially described as the pestles from Roman cosmetic grinders which seems unlikely in view of their small size. Comparison can be made with Roman toggles and button and loop fasteners but none of these has the same, double loop, fixing as are seen on these pieces and a post Medieval dating is suggested.
