Late/Post Medieval purse bar of Williams (Finds Research Group Datasheet, forthcoming) Class H2. Copper alloy with punched, foliate decoration on the central block and around the loop which, on one face, has been almost completely worn away. Across the apex of the loop is row of close-packed punch marks flanked by two rows of incised arcs. The loop is made from a piece of sheet metal, folded around to form a tapering sleeve. Between the narrow ends of the loop is a square block, secured by a single 4.0mm diameter rivet, its ends flush with the faces of the loop. A pin projects from the underside of this block and passes through the central block from which the two bars of the purse project. The pin terminates in a rove which secures it in place and allows the loop and bars to articulate. The bars are round sectioned, 5.0mm diameter, terminating in 12.4mm diameter, biconical bosses. Width 70.0mm, Height 51.1mm, Thickness 13.1mm, Mass 37.89g.

This purse bar is very similar to ESS-ECF117, the decoration on which David Williams (ibid.) compared to that seen on the sleeve of a garment worn in a portrait of Sir Thomas Gresham c. 1565.
