A complete copper-alloy purse hanger of medieval date, c. AD 1250 - 1400. This hanger comprises three arches, the central arch being slightly pointed. Narrowed terminals project to either end.
The metal has a dark green patina and survives in good condition. The object is 41.2mm long, 5.2mm wide, 1.9mm thick and weighs 2.5g.
Purse hangers were designed to swing freely from a bar mount on a girdle. When they were not used to attach purses to belts such objects were often used to attach knives. A close parallel can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 223; ref. 1198) dating to the second half of the 14th century. Purse hangers are generally dated to the 13th century.
