Lead alloy toy soldier fragment. A probably solid cast naturalistically modelled cavalry horse at the canter, at a scale of c.1:35. The military credentials of the piece are established by its square saddle cloth, shabraque and blanket roll; the reins are also modelled in relief. A hole is drilled in the saddle for the attachment of a separate rider [lost], a feature of Continental toy soldiers. The narrow form when viewed end-on is a further trait suggesting German manufacture. Retaining metal primer overall; traces of brown paint appear on the body of the horse. The lower legs, tail and feet are lost. The posture of the horse may suggest the manufacturer Heyde, active from c.1870, whose products included many representing British soldiers and intended for the British market (Johnson, P. 1981, Toy Armies, Batsford, London, plate 16). Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1880-1900.
