An incomplete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Medieval to Post medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1700).
The weight is an thick disc in shape. It is sub rectangular in cross section. Both sides are flat. The front is decorated with a series of radiating lines, possibly representing a sunburst. The back is undecorated.
It has a diameter of 36.0 mm and is 6.0 mm thick. It weighs 54.8 g (1.9 oz).
The weight is light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
Weights of this style are frequently encountered, and commonly thought to be of Medieval to Post Medieval dating. Lead weights, due to be a functional artefact, do change little in style over time, and as such can be hard to date accurately. Little study has been done to date on typological studies to confirm the dating of different styles. It is possible that this may have also functioned as a gaming piece.
