An incomplete copper alloy trade weight or lid of Early Modern dating (AD 1836 to AD 1901).

The probable trade weight or lid is circular, with a raised rim. The back is covered with white probable solder, and is the reverse of the front, with a recessed rim. This probable solder suggested that it was secured, probably to the lid of a box of cup weights. The front bears several stamped symbols. In the centre, inside a double engraved ring, is a Crowned VR, indicating that it was made during the reign of Queen Victoria between 1836 and 1901. Around the outside are six capital letter A's, with numbers beneath. The numbers include: 60, 62, 64 and several are unclear. The letter A signifys the use of the Averdupois weight system, and the numbers would suggest the year that they were checked. Therefore it is probable to assume that this probable trade weight lid was in use between 1860 and 1864.

It has a diameter of 41.3 mm and is 4.8 mm thick. The metal is 1.9 mm thick. It weighs 12.6 g (0.44 oz).

The trade weight lid is a mid reddish brown to green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original detail.
