A post medieval silver half groat of the Commonwealth (AD 1649-1660). Standard type, mark of value II, mint of London. North 1991 volume II, page 206, number 2728. The coin has been pierced from the reverse on the terminal point of the second shield. The coin has been clipped slightly, and is an irregular shape.

Notes:

This pierced coin does not constitute as treasure, as the pierced hole is untidy, and not alighned with the top of either shield, so it is unlikely to have been intended to convert the coin into jewellery or other non-coin object, Also, Commonwealth coins were aggressively demonetised after the Restoration, and piercing was historically one way of marking out coins for removal from currency. (J. Naylor and B.Cook, pers comm, 27.09.17.)
