FINGER RING

Unique ID: NMGW-C6437A

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Decorative silver-gilt posy-ring.

The hoop fragment is of flattened D cross-section. The outer surface is cast with a repeating pattern of cells and raised single dots or pellets. Raised dots also fill the field between the cells and the plain borders. The areas between the raised decoration are inlaid with white and green enamel, most of which is now missing. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text: FEAREĀ·GODĀ·ONLI, in Roman capitals. The hoop is slightly distorted.

The internal diameter is 17.6 x 17.2mm; external diameter 19 x 19.6mm; band width 4.8 mm; band thickness 0.9mm; weight 1.76g.

The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.

Notes:

The inscription is incomplete, but probably originally reflected sentiments expressed on other rings such as Feare God from Trawsfynydd (Arch Camb 1860, 152), + FEARE GOD (Llantwit Major 15.2) and HONOUR GOD (Dalton 1912, no. 952). The lettering, enamelled decoration and form of the ring indicate that it is of late sixteenth-century date. Similar rings have been found in Wales at Old Beaupre (with white enamel, against a background of blue enamel, with intervening raised gold spots; NMW 03.19), Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire (2003) and Lower Monkton farm, Monknash (1993; also with white and blue enamel). The form is similar to one from Wilberfoss, East Yorkshire, which has white enamelled decoration incorporating diamond-shaped cells, and white enamel (attributed to the late sixteenth to seventeenth century: TAR 2001, no. 126), and examples in the collections of the British Museum (e.g. Dalton 1912, no. 1232).
