Gold fede or fidelity ring.
The hoop is of wounds triangular cross-section. The outer surface is plain. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text: Feare god and love mee, in vertical italic script.
Internal hoop diameter 18.6 mm; external hoop diameter 23.2mm; band width 2.3mm; band height 4.8mm; weight 5.31g.
The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.
Notes:
The style of the lettering and decoration, and form of the ring indicate that it is of 17th- or early eighteenth-century date (after AD 1650). Similar mottoes include Fear God love me from St Nicholas in the Vale (probably early eighteenth century), 'FEAR GOD' from Llantwit Major (seventeenth or early eighteenth century; Treasure Receipt Wales 2005.2) and Fear God love me on an eighteenth-century ring from the Neath area (January 1997). The way in which the ascenders on the 'd' and 'l' turn to the right can be found on the copybook attributed to John Stonestreet (1688), and the downstroke curl of the 'g' in G. H. Wilmart's, Memoria spiritual of 1673, and Juan Claudio Aznar de Polanco's Arte Nuevo de escribar of 1719 (Whalley 1980, 231, 242, 279-80). The lettering style does continue into the eighteenth century, though it retains the verticality of the previous century. The likely date range would appear to be c. 1650-1750.
