A Medieval copper alloy English Jetton dating to the period c. AD 1280 - 1343. Obverse: Two crowns, one above each other with a border of alternating strokes and rosettes. Reverse: cross moline with pellets in each angle on the reverse and a border of pellets. cf Mitchiner (1988) page 114, No. 222-224.
These jettons were contemporary to the Edward I jettons produced which imitated the sterling pennies. Jettons are casting counters first appearing in France in the thirteenth century. The word derives from jeter which means to 'throw' or 'push'. They were used on a lined board as counters for calculations. The board is known as a chequer board which is how the term 'Chancellor of the Exchequer' derived.
Dimensions: 18.35 mm in diameter, 0.96 mm in thickness and weighs 1.1 grams.
