STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: DUR-B23402

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy strap fitting or sword belt hangar, in the form of an asymmetrical double looped plate, dating to the post-medieval period, (c.AD 1500-1600).

The object is comprised of an irregular asymmetrical plate with two (of three) remaining integral basal loops. The left loop retains its circular suspension-eye, and appears broken at the base; the latter is missing from the central loop. The fitting has been broken to the right of the central rivet hole, thus the right loop, and right rivet hole, are missing. There is also evidence of damage to the fitting in the vicinity of the left rivet hole, resulting in the loss of the central part of the trefoil terminal. The fitting is decorated with foliate and floriate designs in relief. The reverse is undecorated.

The object is damaged (see above) and quite corroded; much of the surface design has been lost. None of the plates and hooks, that would have been attached to the suspension eyes, have survived. The suspension eye that has survived has become upwardly fixed to the main body of the plate by corrosion.

The fitting measures 40.44mm long, and with the loops is 26.87mm wide (the main body of the plate is thus up to 14.54mm wide). The plate is 2.25mm thick. The surviving loops have an external diameter of approximately 10.56mm, and are up to 3.75mm thick. The suspension-eye is 11.17mm wide, 23.56mm long and 3.2mm thick. The fitting weighs 11.7g.

The object appears to be very similar to a more complete example illustrated in Read (2008, 220: 793). Similar examples of such sword belt strap fittings can be seen on the database, including: BERK-651A59, SUR-3C9DB8, SOM-364E5B and LANCUM-6FFFCB
