Possibly a mount. Copper alloy with silver plating and gold inlay. Central panel containing circular scrolling decoration and three ring and dot motifs evenly spaced across the panel. Grooved decoration is present along the top and bottom edges. The back of the object appears to have the remains of some form of adhesive. No close parallels for this object could be found, and its exact date and function could not be established. The shape shows some similarities with a planoconvex formed iron sheet, possibly a mount, dated to circa 1550-1600 recorded as a riverside find from Southwark, London. See G. Egan, 2005, no. 1184, p. 215. However, the lack of holes on 2017 T490 would make it problematic for mounting onto a larger object. Although no specific date can be confidently ascribed to this object, the context of its discovery would indicate that it is a historical artefact and a broad range of 1450-1600 would seem appropriate.
