A fragmented lead-alloy toy figurine of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1550 - 1610.
Description: The object has fragmented into 11pieces but appears to have originally depicted a woman in a long wide dress and high collar, typical of the Tudor period. Some pieces show additional detail but much of it is indistinct due to the wear and fragmentary nature. The Surface is patinated an off white colour typical of patinated lead.
Measurements: Fragments total 35.8g in weight.
Discussion: Hollow lead figurines as toys are a well-known feature of the later Tudor period, roughly the second half of the 16th century and a number of which are illustrated by Egan (1996, cover). This example, despite being incomplete is particularly striking due to its' high collar or ruff not seen on examples discussed by Egan's (1996, 5). In this text (ibid/) a number of examples are discussed as wearing German fashion rather than distinct English Tudor fashion as this example does. As these toys come into fashion from the mid 16th century a date between 1550 and 1610 is therefore likely.
