An incomplete copper alloy medieval buckle with separate plate. The buckle frame is oval in shape with a straight outer side, which has a central recess around which a copper alloy sheet metal roller remains wrapped. There is a pointed knop at either end of the recess. The strap bar is narrowed and an incomplete plate remains attached to it. The plate is formed from a long rectangular strip of sheet metal with a rectangular slot cut into its centre where it is wrapped around the frame, creating a gap where the pin (missing) would have sat originally. The outer end of the plate is missing. The two halves of the plate are attached together with three in situ copper alloy rivets, two at the inner end and one in the centre. The outer face of one side of the plate is decorated with double lines of small triangular dots along each edge. The metal remains in good condition with s shiny, dark green patina.
This is an example of a Meols Type 11 buckle, which dates to the late 14th century (Griffiths et al. 2007, fig.2.5.1).
