A fragment of a Roman copper alloy finger ring with glass intaglio. Only the outer part of the ring survives. The band is D-shaped in cross-section and expands from the shoulders to the outer section, which is the widest part of the ring. In the centre of the outer face of the outer section there is an oval recess, which contains an in situ glass intaglio. Unfortunately the outer surface of this intaglio is cracked and damaged, obscuring any design that may have been engraved on to it originally. The colour of the intaglio appears to have been dark blue, but again is obscured by corrosion. There is damage to one side of the band and the breaks are well worn.
The ring belongs to Henig's (1974) Type III, which are roughly of 1st to 3rd century AD date. A similar ring, also with intaglio, was found during excavations at Colchester (Crummy 1983, p.48, fig.50, no.1786).
