An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative, Polden Hill brooch of Roman date (AD75-120). The wings are semi-cylindrical and the wing caps are complete and perforated (diameter 1.1mm). The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The bow head is hump-like, and slightly angular (comma shaped) in profile; from the centre of the reverse the remains of a small projecting backwards facing hook extends. The reverse of the head has a rectangular shaped recess. The bow has a faceted D shaped cross section it extends to an eroded blunt pointed foot. The profile of the bow is curved and has probably been deliberately distorted. The catchplate is lost, all that remains is an eroded rib which descends from the mid-point of the bow. The bow is decorated with a recessed chanel which descends the spine - along the mid-point of this are a series of small regular pellets forming a rope-like pattern. Either side of the bow against the wings are wedge shaped panels. The brooch is a mid green colour with well formed but heavily abraded surface patina. Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches (pp 300 fig; 159) and Bayley and Butcher: Roman Brooches in Britain (pp 89-92).

The brooch measures

29.9mm length, 18.6mm width (across wings), 7.7mm width across bow, is 3.9mm thick across the bow, and weighs 6.94 grams.
