A medieval copper alloy gilt annular brooch of 13th to 14th century date. The frame is circular in cross-section, measuring 2.0mm in diameter, with a constriction for the pin 2.3 mm wide. Around this curves the flat loop of the pin, not quite joining up with its other end. Below the pin is circular in cross-section and tapers towards its point (1.9 mm to 1.2mm wide), extending for c.17.9 mm and resting on the frame.
Much of the original patina is lost and the metal is a dark brown in colour and rough to touch. Traces of gilding can still be seen on the inside of the frame and the pin. The brooch measures 23.6 mm in diameter, 1.9 mm in max. thickness and weighs 1.49 g.
Egan & Pritchard (1991, p 64-5) noted the difficulty of distinguishing plain annular brooches from buckles and decided to use the presence of a pin constriction on the frame to identify a brooch, categorising this example as a brooch.
