UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SF-08088D

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete fragment originating from an unidentified object, possibly a brooch headplate of Early Anglo-Saxon date, c. 450-550 AD. The fragment would probably have originally been rectangular in plan, though now only c. half survives due to an old break- giving the remainder of the object a broadly sub-triangular appearance. Its upper (?) edge demonstrates two sub-circular knops at each end, flanking the remains of a central worn projection which may have originally been a third knop. The centre of the fragment demonstrates the worn and truncated remains of an apparent central boss, around the upper edge of which is a decorative 'ropework' like motif consisting two parallel lines, between which is a series of closely-spaced oblique incisions. Preserved in fair condition with an uneven greenish patina, it survives to a maximum length of 15.15mm down its longest edge, 20.45mm wide at its upper edge, and 3.34mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 2.81g. No exact parallel could be found.
