An incomplete cast copper-alloy plate brooch dating to the Roman period, c. 200-300 AD. The brooch is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in section, with a squared-off body. The catchplate and pin mechanism on the rear of the object are missing in old damage, though otherwise the brooch is preserved intact in good condition. The outer face of the brooch is broadly divided into three sections. The first two are concentric rings demonstrating moulded patterns of closely-spaced repeating oblique elongated 'S' shapes, divided from each other by a prominent concentric ridge. In the centre of the brooch is a raised circular cell, which now contains the heavily melted and distorted remains of a glass setting, now a dark blackish colour. The rear face of the brooch is rather encrusted with corrosion products, though the remains of the pin mechanism and catchplate can still be seen. Preserved in fair condition with an even greenish patina, it measures 44.07mm in diameter, c. 9.7mm thick at its midpoint, and 3.08mm thick at its outer edge. It weighs 32.75g.
A practically identical brooch is published by Mackreth 2011, chapter 7, part 1, British, group 3.b6; Mackreth 2011, vol. II, p. 111, pl. 108, no. 11629. See also PUBLIC-680684 on the PAS database.
