A near complete Early Medieval to Medieval copper alloy strap end, probably dating to c. AD 750-1100. The strap end consists of a sub-rectangular shaft, 4.4mm wide by 2.9mm thick, with a zoomorphic terminal and wedge-shaped, transversely split attachment end. The attachement end terminates in a worn break, with the lower curve of a now incomplete rivet hole, probably one of two, visible on the left. The attachment end is 8.7mm wide at the break, and tapers into the shaft, with the juncture between the two marked by three transverse grooves. Three similar grooves mark the juncture between the shaft and zoomorphic terminal. Corrosion leaves the detail of the terminal indistinct, however it appears to have been simiplistic, with semi-circular facets on either side of the broadly D-shaped terminal and the suggestion of rounded ears above.

Dimensions: length 32.8mm; width 8.7mm; thickness 2.9mm; weight 2.80g.

Simple strap ends such as this fit into Thomas' Class B, type 1, see, for example, a comparible strap end published by Thomas (2000: 510, fig. 3.20A). Such strap ends are well attested in archaeolgical contexts between the mid-8th and 11th centuries (ibid: 202-203).

Class: Thomas Class B, Type 1
