An incomplete copper alloy Brooch of Roman date (AD 43-70). The object is a hinged Hod Hill type. The surviving brooch largely comprises of the bow and head of the brooch only, with the catchplate, axis bar and pin missing.

The head of the brooch expands forwards, in a flat, inverted trapezoidal plate, which would have held an axis bar and pin, both now missing. A central rectangular slot has been cut into the reverse of the head to accomodate the pin.

The bow projects outwards from the head with a broadly D-shaped cross section, this upper section of the bow cast into a single cross-moulding, flanked by two narrowed transverse, three stepped, waisted sections below the head and above the tapered pointed foot. The back of the foot retains the vestigial remains of an integral catchplate.

The metal is a light green in colour with a pitted and corroded patina.

Hattatt, P 320, No 861.
