SCRAPER (TOOL)

Unique ID: YORYM-9DE547

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete knapped lithic implement of Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The implement is a scraper formed from a secondary flake which is D-shaped in plan and section. The ventral surface displays ripples of percussion and a large negative scar. The dorsal surface retains approximately 80% cortex. Long, parallel, abrupt retouch is present on the distal edge, extending into both sides.

The flint is a mid-grey colour with lighter inclusions. The implement is 39.9mm long, 34.5mm wide, 9.9mm thick and weighs 17.7g.

Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are generally less chronologically distinctive than other artefact types. They had many different functions as they were very useful tools and were employed, for example, for skinning animals, removing the fatty deposit from hinds and much more
