Cast copper-alloy square-headed brooch of the small-long variety. Dating to the Early Medieval period, c. 6th - 7th centuries (AD 500 - 700).
The head is square in shape though the lower edge is cut into by the top of the bow, forming two slight flanges on the lower edge of the square head.
The bow is slightly curved and features moulded raised transverse linear ridge decoration of varying thickness, concentrated near the junctures with the head and the foot.
The foot is fan-shaped and flares out from the end of the bow before forming a curving bottom edge.
The back of the square head shows a central tab with a hole through length still visible. This is the remains of the pin mechanism. The catch plate is formed from a rectangular tab attached to the lower portion of the bow which has been bent over to formed a curved portion in which the pin would be secured. The pin is missing.
Dimensions: weight: 15.3g, length: 59.9mm, width: 27.9mm, thickness: 3.2mm
