COIN

Unique ID: WMID-5D0476

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete silver penny of uncertain ruler, but probably dating to the period AD 1272 to AD 1489. Obverse and reverse heavily worn so ruler and mint illegible. Coin is pierced with a circular perforation, probably drilled from the reverse to the obverse. Internal diameter is 1.4 mm.

Diameter: 18.6 mm
Thickness: 0.9 mm
Weight: 0.9 g

This silver medieval coin has been pierced, indicating a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential Treasure. However, since coins of this period with similar piercings appear in hoards of currency, it suggests that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins. It therefore cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as an item of jewellery at the time that the coin was deposited, so it should be considered to be Not Treasure.

Evidence of reuse: coin has been pierced
