A complete silver stud, possibly fastener or collar related, Form 2, type B (Lewis 2013, 6), likely dating c.AD1625-1725

Description: It consists of two discoidal sections joined by a central integral stem. The upper disc has a bevelled, folded outer edge producing a dish shape and thus a concave reverse. Its outer face is decorated with a flaming heart pierced by two arrows (Lewis Form 1, Type B) against a background of small incised dots. The outer face of the rear disc has two fine concentric grooves around the outer edge the letters 'I.M' impressed in the centre. It survives in fine condition with very little damage.

Dimensions: Diameter: 12.51mm, thickness: 7.77mm, weight: 1.49g

Discussion: The fashion for cufflinks and studs to fasten sleeves developed during the 17th century and the 'crown and heart' device was traditionally thought to commemorate the wedding of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1662, later taking on more general connotations of love and marriage (Lewis 2013, 4). Lewis (ibid.) however points out the motif is far older than this and some connection Charles I are known. So, with the popularity of such studs and cufflinks in the mid-late 17th century a start date some point in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century seems likely. The general use of such motifs does appear to peter out from common use in the early 18th century. A date c.AD 1625-1725 is therefore suggested.

Many cuff links and studs bearing a similar design have been recorded on to the Portable Antiquities Scheme database and subsequently been declared Treasure: including 2017T337 (YORYM-C94E50), (2016T451) NMS-9968A5 and 2017T449 (SF-424A2C).

Notes:

Conclusion: It is therefore likely the object dates to before 1718 and as the object is made of more than 10% precious metals, it constitutes potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996.
