An incomplete copper alloy Late Iron Age/ Early Roman La Tène III (AD 20-100) simple one-piece brooch or Nauheim derivative type brooch, with one coil only surviving of the spring and missing the pin and the lower bow and catchplate.
The main body of the brooch is 'kite' shaped, with long sides gradually expanding (from 5.3 mm to 8.5 mm) before narrowing sharply to the top of the foot/ lower bow. It is decorated to the front with two longitudinal grooves flanking each edge. The top of the foot/ lower bow is decorated with four, parallel and transverse grooves. The reverse of the bow presents some short transverse incised lines.
The front of the bow is missing much of the original olive green patina and shows patches of corrosion. The reverse is dark green in colour.
The brooch measures 32.0 mm in length, 8.5 mm in max.width and weighs 1.31 g.
Similar variant and derivative brooches are illustrated in Hattatt (2000) p.290-291, figs. 149-150. CF. HAMP-6E0240 and HAMP-F50B61 on this database.
